Shelly Beach

Headland at the end of the beach

Best for: Fishing, Camping and Picnics

At the bottom of a long road that winds its way down from the top of the headland, Shelly Beach is a beautiful wide white sandy beach with a steep drop off into the water making it very good for fishing while being able to sit comfortably on the sand. In fact, it is actually a named Salmon fishery so there must be plenty of fish around.

The beach also boasts several caravan bays that can be booked in advance for those that would like to stay on overnight and is also the outflow point for a small stream. Up the hill a bit on the access road there are also several lookouts from which on our last visit we were lucky enough to see a few whales meandering past as they migrate north for their breeding season.

As well as being wide and sandy, the beach is a nice length, stretching around about a kilometre it provides plenty of space while still being a comfortable length to walk end to end.  Also, mixed in amongst the sand are quite a large number of shells. They are by no means exotic but they are still good for keeping small children occupied.

In short, it’s a great place for a visit be it for fishing or just a picnic.
